Fall Visit to the Nubian Village in Egypt

This is the last post on the Egypt series. You can see the first on Cairo and the pyramids here; and the second on the Nile River here. This last one takes us to the Nubian Village near Aswan along the Nile River. A couple of images are taken in the Philae Temple and the Aswan area.
The Nubian Village can be reached with a 30-minute Felucca ride from Aswan.

Nubian Village

The village was very colorful, and it’s obvious they love to show off their crafts and sell traditional food in its streets. In my experience, in spending an afternoon there, they showed great hospitality, including in one of the Nubian family houses. Before the 1960s, Nubian villages were flooded every summer. But in the early 60s, the government decided to begin construction of Aswan’s High Dam to create more water and electricity capacity for Egypt. This resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of Egyptian and Sudanese Nubians, including this very village. This relocation has been ingrained in the historical and cultural memory of the Nubians of Egypt.
